Puerto Morelos

Despite its Spanish moniker, Cinco de Mayo is an American holiday, originally instituted to commemorate freedom and democracy during the American Civil War. In the 1940s, the holiday rose to it’s current renown – and became inextricably linked to wild parties and plenty of tequila. That said, Cinco de Mayo does double-duty as a day to down some margs and celebrate Mexican heritage and pride. After all, it is a Mexican holiday — just to a lesser degree. No matter how you slice it, the fifth of May is always a great day to let loose, grab a Corona or tequila shot, and get your fiesta on. Here are five of our favorite Mexican hotels perfect for south-of-the-border celebrations.

Krystal Puerto Vallarta

1. Krystal Puerto Vallarta

On a wide, sandy beach just outside of Puerto Vallarta, the Krystal Puerto Vallarta is a great budget pick — and the complete review with photos was just recently added to Oyster.com! There are six pools and six whirlpools, plus a poolside bar — perfect for Cinco de Mayo reveling. The wallet-friendly day spa offers inexpensive massages, aromatherapy treatments, and salon services — and best of all, guests on the all-inclusive plan get 30 percent off all treatments.

There are all-inclusive resorts, and then there are all-inclusive resorts. The difference lies in the details: Going above and beyond the standard amenities, the ten hotels we’ve hand-picked as the best of the all-inclusive best offer fun and exciting ways for travelers to indulge. World-class food, beautiful decor, and fantastic activities are all to be had — and everything is built into one price-per-day, making planning out your budget a simple feat. From Cabo to Cancun and back again, these are the ten all-inclusive resorts that are truly worthy of the name.

1. Zoetry Paraiso de la Bonita Riviera Maya, Puerto Morelos

With only 90 suites, the Zoetry Paraiso offers a romantic, wellness-centric boutique experience in the Mayan Riviera. Room layouts are unique, with indoor gardens and plunge pools. The pool area and beach are relaxed and tranquil, and the on-site dining keeps the resort’s wellness theme alive with delicious, healthy meals. Included amenities not standard at most all-inclusive resorts — such as a “welcome” bottle of tequila, a daily bottle of champagne, a one-hour Catamaran sunset sail, three-times-daily maid service, and private chauffeured airport transfers, –make this (admittedly pricey) resort a standout among Puerto Morelos’ finest properties.

If you love lazing away the day in the hotel pool, you can’t do much better than staying in a swim-up suite, where it’s possible to dip into the water right from your back door. The swim-up suite combines the ease of access of a private pool with the features and size of a public one. And there’s something pretty cool about being able to swim home to your room. Who wants to walk when you’re on vacation in a tropical paradise?

One Bal Harbour Resort bathrooms have some of the best views in the Miami.

Some people prefer to read a magazine in the restroom, but we’d much rather gaze out over a stunning view. There’s nothing we love more than exotic sights, no matter where we’re taking in the view — the shower, tub, or elsewhere. From Hong Kong to Miami, Boston to Barcelona, here are our favorite hotel views from the best seat in the house.

Escape to this pier that leads to nowhere -- except a gorgeous view over the ocean.

Escape to this pier that leads to nowhere -- except a gorgeous view over the ocean.

Located on a beach that’s ideal for tanning, kayaking, and taking in the view (some seaweed debris makes it less so for taking a dip), the Azul Sensatori Hotel is one of the many luxurious options in Puerto Morelos. But while some other resorts may be more luxe, few are as family-friendly. The all-inclusive resort offers plenty of amenities and services for those traveling with children, including a fabulous kids’ club with daily activities, a kiddy pool, a kid-size gym, a Fisher-Price toy lending program, and even a life-size Dora the Explorer running around. For the adults, the spa is airy and luxurious with soothing decor, and the adults-only pool is relaxing and serene. And the beach is gorgeous day and night, with soft sand and a picturesque pier for taking in the view. So as we say every week: sit back, relax, and soak up the goodness that is the Azul Sensatori.

When the last sparkler has gone out, the wedding’s over. For most people. Except the bride and groom, natch. The tradition of taking a honeymoon is a long and storied one, but there’s been a consistent for many of those newlyweds: They wanna stay in a seriously swag suite. After all, it is sort of the one chance you have to live it up — unless you’re made of money, in which case, you should book a suite every time you travel. Ballers aside, the honeymoon is the best time to treat yourself to an awesome hotel room with all the bells and whistles two newlyweds could want — theoretically, at least.

The Honeymoon: Hong Kong
The Suite: Extreme WOW Suite at the W Hong Kong

The Extreme WOW Suite reflects the high-design area of Kolwoon in Hong Kong.

Amazing Jack & Jill sinks lets your newly betrothed know to stay away from your products.

Hong Kong is a fabulous urban destination for those couples seeking out incredible, modern architecture, world-class shopping, and Michelin-starred dining on a nightly basis. And the W Hong Kong is in the heart of the tourist district, Kowloon, and features all the funky extras you’d expect from a W as well as an unreal, souped-up version of the stateside Bliss Spa chain. And the Extreme WOW Suite not only has all the high-tech essentials that seem commonplace in Hong Kong, but also has a fully-stocked kitchenette, spacious closet (because every outfit was carefully planned and considered), and dizzying views of the harbor.

Ay Dios mio! Our friend Dora the Explorer looks a little incapacitated after a day at the kid’s club at the Azul Sensatori Hotel. The Puerto Morelos resort offers plenty of amenities to keep little ones occupied, but we have a feeling that seeing their beloved bilingual traveler minus a foot might send them running back to their parents. We’re just hoping her friend in the stripes can put an end to the madness before Dora really gets hurt.
