The Wildest Hotel Pool Parties

by Rachel on February 7, 2012

It’s time to get wet, y’all! With Spring Break just around the corner — and the rest of us here dying for a warm-weather vacation — we thought about where we’d wanna party in the sun. Check out the hottest pool parties around the globe, and then tell us: Which is your favorite pool party?

THE HOTEL: Hard Rock Hotel and Casino; Las Vegas, NV

WHY SPLASH AROUND HERE: Easily one of the most popular with the bachelor-and-bachelorette set, the weekly Sunday Rehab Pool Party is notorious for bringing in huge (but sexy!) crowds. An eight-hour affair (it starts at noon), the party is known to bring in top party DJs from around the globe including Paul Oakenfold and Bad Boy Bill who spin tunes that range from Top 40 pop hits to banging house beats.

WTF Wednesday: Hellooo, Swimfan

by Zach on February 1, 2012

Welcome to another edition of WTF Wednesday, where we share some of our craziest snapshots. This week’s photo comes to us from the Custom Hotel in Los Angeles, CA, where the decor is arguably some of the weirdest we’ve ever seen. Avant-garde style makes for great art, but when an the elevator ride back to your room late at night involves a stare down with a man who looks like a deranged stalker, we’re less thrilled with its use in hotel decor. Check out our caption after the jump, then share your own!

The oversize pool at the Beverly Hilton; Los Angeles, CA

It should come as little surprise that we’re highlighting one of our favorite hotels that also happens to be hosting the 69th annual Golden Globe Awards this Sunday night. The Beverly Hilton, which underwent serious renovations in 2006, plays host to the awards show every year — and its not hard to see why: The Beverly Hilton simply exudes affordable luxury. Two business centers and fast Internet in the elegant rooms make it a top pick for business travelers; the huge pool and fancy fitness center are comprable to the Hilton’s more expensive counterparts, even if its restaurants fall a bit short. While stars like Ryan Gosling, Rooney Mara and George Clooney grace the red carpet (while crossing their fingers for a statuette), we’ll be hunkered on the couch watching them in all their black-tie glory — but now we’ll have more insight into the property’s glittering Hollywood history. Check out more amazing photos of the hotel after the jump or read the full review here >>

Most of us spent last weekend popping bottles of (cheap) champagne, passing cheese platters, or ordering in MSG-loaded Chinese food. Regardless of which indulgence you chose, there’s definitely at least a tinge of holiday hangover – alcoholic or otherwise. Start the year off right by heading to one of these super-sleek spas in a city near you.

LOS ANGELES: The Spa at the Beverly Hills Wilshire
The Detox Treatment: The Detox Massage ($180 for 60 minutes)

The Deal: As if complimentary use of the 8,000-square foot spa’s saunas, steam rooms, and experience showers (which feature the likes of colored lighting and variable pressure) wasn’t rejuvenating enough, every treatment here is top-notch, which is why we’d head straight for a Detox Massage. Therapists at the Rodeo Spa use specific massage techniques to flush out kidney, liver and other bodily toxins that will relax your mind, too.

Like we saw in our previous Photo Fakeout at the Crowne Plaza Hotel Beverly Hills, by showing only a small part of the pool, a hotel can lead consumers to believe that the pool is larger than it is. It’s only when you can see the entire pool that you’ll really get a true sense of its size. As Oyster’s photo shows (above right), the pool at The Orlando hotel in Los Angeles is really quite tiny.

As we’ve seen before with the pools at Aqua Aloha Surf and The Equus, photographers like to get and down dirty with hotel pools. By crouching low and pushing right up against a pool (like the one seen here at Crowne Plaza Hotel Beverly Hills), a photographer can get a wide-angle shot that makes the pool look larger than it is. When part of the pool is out of sight, it’s hard to tell where it truly ends and begins. By showing the pool in its entirety, Oyster gives a realistic view.

Butterfly Bar, Petit Ermitage, Los Angeles

The outdoor portion of Butterfly Bar at Petit Ermitage in Los Angeles

Last week we told you about six hotels that we consider to be the best hidden gem hotels in Los Angeles. One of them, Petit Ermitage, is just so quaint and adorable that we just need to tell you more. Its bohemianism, lovely outdoor spaces, and unassuming location on a residential street make it one of our favorite picks in L.A., so below are some photo highlights that will show you around the hotel. Here’s hoping you fall in love with it as much as we have.

You can skip the below photo tour and head straight to our hotel review of Petit Ermitage in Los Angeles to read more about it, or you can go straight to our 297 photos of the hotel.

Entrance to Petit Ermitage

Entrance to Petit Ermitage

Los Angeles has plenty of famous, historic hotels that everyone knows by name: Beverly Hills Hotel, Chateau Marmont, and the Beverly Wilshire, to name a few. And sure, if you want to drop a lot of money and hob nob with celebrities, these are some of the best haunts around. But as we visited hotels all around the city, we found that some of the most charming hotels to be ones that fly under the radar. So if you’re looking for something a little more unique or off the beaten path, consider one of these six hidden gems.

Petit Ermitage

  • Location: Hollywood & West Hollywood, Los Angeles
  • Pearls: 4 of 5

It’s true that the bohemianism and purposely-distressed furniture won’t appeal to everyone, but we dig it. For half the price of some of its competitors, you get a newly renovated, truly unique boutique with large suites (many with kitchens) and a lovely rooftop pool. If you’re not up for a dip, you can have breakfast in a rooftop garden or read by the fireplace in Masters’ Lounge,  Read the full Petit Ermitage hotel review.

A view of Downtown LA, where the famous Staples Center is located

A view of Downtown LA, where the famous Staples Center is located

Sports are everywhere you look this time of year: football is just starting, baseball and MLS soccer are going into playoff mode, and before we know it, basketball and hockey will be in full swing, too. As a New York fan and resident, it pains me to suggest escaping to the warm weather of the Southern California to get your sports fix, but there’s no denying the convenience of having so many great arenas centrally located in or near downtown. And whether you’re traveling just to see your team or you’re hoping to catch a game as part of a larger trip, these are the hotels you’ll find most convenient.

A common occurence for LA hotel-goers

It’s well known that Los Angeles is the center of the film universe, but it is also home to some of the finest hotels in the country. What happens when the two industries collide? Beautiful onscreen magic. Whether it’s Julia Roberts and Richard Gere rolling around the Presidential Suite of The Beverly Wilshire in Pretty Woman or Arnold Schwarzenegger riding a horse into a Westin Bonaventure Hotel elevator in True Lies, Los Angeles hotels always find a way to get their fifteen minutes of fame on the big screen.

The Westin Bonaventure Hotel and Suites

The glass exterior of The Westin Bonaventure

The Westin Bonaventure’s elegant modern glass exterior enclose some of the best views in all of LA. This incredible piece of architecture has become a common backdrop for some pretty memorable movie moments. Clint Eastwood plays Secret Service Agent Frank Horrigan, who tries to thwart a Presidential assassination attempt by John Malkovich’s character Mitch Lear, in In The Line Fire (1993), and arguably the most notable Westin Bonaventure moment is Arnold Schwarzenegger’s horseback ride into one of the hotel’s elevators in True Lies (1994).

Other movies filmed here include:

  • Wonderland (2003)
  • Heat (1995)
  • Forget Paris (1995)
  • Nick of Time (1993)
  • Lethal Weapon 2 (1989)
  • Rain Main (1988)
  • Blue Thunder (1983)
