Is all the talk of summer and beaches…bumming you out? Does the entire concept of humidity make you want to cry? If you see one more Instagram photo of “hot-dog legs” are you going to lose it? Good news! You’re not crazy or a heartless, sun-hating scrooge — and you’re not alone. The dogs days of summer are truly upon us, and sometimes it’s all too easy to dream of snowbanks and icicles (which will be a nightmare once we’re in the thick of winter — but then, of course, we’ll dream of sizzling sidewalks and sun galore). So if you’re already missing winter, here’s where you can travel right now where it’s 50 degrees or cooler. And, of course, we’ve found the coziest hotels nearby where you can properly embrace sweater weather by curling up in front of a fireplace that will chase the (all-too-welcome) chill away.
The Southern Hemisphere is where winter’s at, and one of our favorite destinations down under is none other than Melbourne, Australia. Known as Australia’s culture capital, this city situated on Port Phillip Bay is packed with Victorian buildings, museums, galleries, large parks, and gardens. The tree-lined streets and green spaces create a clean, eco-friendly vibe, which is probably part of the reason Melbourne has consistently been dubbed as one of the world’s most livable cities. During the winter months, locals enjoy ice skating, curling, and banishing the chill at the nearby Peninsula Hot Springs.
Stay: Hotel Lindrum
This modern boutique is located just a short walk from sights such as Federation Square and Melbourne Park. It lacks a fitness center and spa, but the features it does have are done well: The restaurant serves a nice breakfast buffet, and the cozy bar features a fireplace and a billiards table. Rooms feature sleek lines, dark wood accents, high-style light fixtures, and contemporary artwork, which combine to create a chic vibe. Read More »
When the going gets tough, the tough are of tempted to stop going – or going on vacation, that is! But the exact opposite should be true: travel inspires and relaxes us. It takes us to new creative heights. It is refreshing. It’s exactly what we need when we’re in a rut, or going through a rough patch, or simply sick of gray skies and piles of snow. So if you’re yearning to get away from it all but don’t want to break the bank in the process, these six budget destinations come through with incredible deals and plenty of sun-dappled relaxation.
The rules of supply and demand certainly appyl in Mexico, where thousands of hotel rooms mean competition for tourist dollars. And that means great deals on some of the country’s most scenic towns, including towns along the Yucatán Peninsula, the Riviera Maya, and major destinations like Puerto Vallarta and Cancún. Great deals can be had for every type of vacation style, so don’t settle for merely a good price: If you’re a water lover, go for an all-inclusive (or large resort) that bundles jetskis, snorkeling gear, and other amenities into your vacation package. For a more sedate getaway, look for a small hotel or guesthouse where you can escape the crowds.
Stretch your hotel dollar: The Hotel B Cozumel is a steal along the famed Riviera Maya, with a natural snorkeling bay, gorgeous views, and rooms that ooze personality.

We don’t mind sacrificing a little comfort during our travels if that means reducing our carbon footprint. But then again, not all eco-conscious hotels call for lights out and cold showers. The 10 hotels that make our list of those with the best eco-friendly perks aren’t all LEED-certified, but they still know that going green makes guests and Mother Earth happy. So here’s our salute to some great stays that are doing their part to reduce, reuse, and conserve with these awesome green amenities.
Lobby at the CasaCalma Wellness Hotel; Buenos Aires, Argentina
This modern, eco-friendly boutique is the first carbon-neutral hotel in all of Buenos Aires. With just 17 rooms, the CasaCalma offers a cozy, wellness-focused experience to travelers, sporting a vertical garden, an honesty bar with organic products, and a tranquil lobby. The spacious rooms may have a minimalist decor — with blonde wood furniture and a nearly all-white look accented by pops of color — but they have all the amenities you could want, including plush bedding, iPod docks, flat-screen TVs, and attractive vine-draped balconies. The luxurious bathrooms have amenities that include two-person jet tubs, separate large walk-in showers, and — in some — private saunas. Additional perks include Nespresso machines, free Wi-Fi, bicycle rentals, and a free organic buffet breakfast. All of this luxury comes at a price but with it’s fabulous Microcentro location and eco-friendly policies, this hotel is well worth its hefty cost.
