Preparing for the birth of a child is one of the most exciting things that can happen to a couple. Even if it’s just testing paint swatches in the nursery, lots of time and energy is spent getting everything ready for the big day. And while the preparations themselves may seem hectic, they pale in comparison to the duties that come along with caring for a newborn infant.

This is why the trend of “babymooning” began to catch on in the mid-2000s. A quick, romantic trip is a great way for couples spend an intimate weekend together before the arrival of their child. Mothers and fathers-to-be treat themselves to pampering spa treatments, cozy rooms, and relaxation in a last hurrah before parenthood begins. Being the hotel experts, we rounded up some of our favorite hotels for the perfect babymoons. Because take it from us when we say that happy, relaxed parents make the entire process easier.

Mount View Hotel & Spa (Calistoga, CA)

Heading to a small B&B is a win/win for expectant couples: the vibe is more relaxed, the atmosphere more romantic and the service personalized. The Mount View Hotel & Spa takes it a step further with the “Oh Baby!” welcome package: for $270, each parent is treated to a 50 minute massage (including a pre-natal option), a box of chocolate truffles, sparkling cider, two souvenir champagne flutes and a special shirt that helps expectant mothers massage their baby. Need more? The package also includes a $10 “craving card,” where hotel staff will fetch mothers-to-be anything from olives to Oreos from local stores. While we can’t suggest that couples partake in the wine tasting tours that dominate the area, we’re fairly confident that you’ll appreciate the calm surroundings of northern Napa Valley.

Mandarin Oriental, New York (New York, NY)

Spa at the Mandarin Oriental, New York; New York, NY

The New Yorker’s unofficial ethos is “do it right or don’t bother at all,” which covers everything from jaywalking to Japanese food. It should come as no surprise, then, that hotels such as Mandarin Oriental, New York have gone to great lengths to provide expectant mothers with the care and service they need. The on-site spa (arguably one of the best in the city) caters to pregnant guests with a specialized 80-minute maternity massage. Therapists meet with clients beforehand to tailor the massage to their needs. The procedure itself makes use of specialized pillows and lotions with the ultimate goal of helping the mother-to-be feel comfortable again. Once done with their treatments, couples can take advantage of Columbus Circle: they’re just steps away from some of the most celebrated dining in New York at Per Se and Masa, as well as some serious high-end shopping.

The Parker Palm Springs (Palm Springs, CA)

Spa at the Parker Palm Springs; Palm Springs, CA

When it comes down to it, Palm Springs is one of those destinations that seems like it was designed with expectant mothers in mind. Sure, it’s in the middle of the desert, but it’s only a short drive away from L.A. (or a short flight from major cities on the West Coast). The town’s wellness vibe perfectly suits babymooning couples looking for more poolside relaxation that sightseeing or activity. The Parker Palm Springs may be one of the best options in the area: guests can purchase a $200 spa package to be used towards a pre-natal message for mom as well as a massage for the dad-to-be. You can spend the rest of your weekend sipping free lemonade in a poolside cabana, swinging in your patio hammock or warming up by a fire pit. And with Jessica Simpson recently babymooning at the property, you never know who you’ll end up stretching next to in yoga class.

THEHotel at Mandalay Bay (The Strip, Las Vegas, NV)

Bathouse Spa at THEHotel at Mandalay Bay; Las Vegas, NV

Before you get up in arms with this suggestion, remember that not all trips to Sin City have to be like The Hangover. Vegas is only a five-hour drive or quick flight from L.A. and can provide the much-needed change of scenery expectant couples crave. We recommend THEHotel at Mandalay Bay: it provides easy access to all that Vegas has to offer – you know, the killer dining, endless shopping and outrageous spas – all tucked quietly steps off of the crazy bustle of the Strip. If the massive rooms and pool area isn’t enough, the phenomenal on-site Bathhouse Spa should be reason enough for babymooning couples to book here. And of course, we won’t tell if dad sneaks off for some quick blackjack while mom-to-be is taking a nap.

Rosewood Tucker’s Point Hotel and Spa (Hamilton Parish, Bermuda)

The Spa at Rosewood Tucker's Point Hotel & Spa; Hamilton Parish, Bermuda

Just because you’re on the East Coast doesn’t mean you can’t have an island babymoon. Consider Bermuda: Flight times are short (just two hours from New York or 90 minutes from Washington, D.C.), making it ideal for expectant mothers who are craving a secluded beach but can’t stand the idea of a long-haul flight. Tucked away from Bermuda’s busiest attractions, the Rosewood Tucker’s Point is ideal for couples looking to steep themselves in luxury. It has an expansive private beach, three luxurious pools and a 12,000-square foot spa that offers a Mother-to-Be Massage (amongst myriad other indulgent treatments). Not only are rooms spacious with million-dollar views, but the bathrooms are very expectant-mother-friendly with walk-in showers and large soaking tubs. Babymooners can also take advantage of the 24-hour concierge, Sterling service, and the four on-site restaurants.

The St. Regis Hotel Monarch Beach Resort (Dana Point, Orange County, CA)

SoCal residents are used to taking advantage of the consistently gorgeous weather and nature that’s right in their backyards. Babymooners looking for a “staycation” style getaway from the bustle of L.A. can head to Orange County for a few nights in the St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort. While the name is a little misleading (the beach is actually a mile and a half away), the hotel can provide expectant couples with an insanely relaxing pool area and an atmosphere that’s in tune with surrounding nature. The hotel no longer offers specific babymoon packages, but a $400 package for the award-winning Spa Gaucin can get both mothers and fathers-to-be a massage and other treatments (prenatal massages are offered, naturally). Throw in a few nights in a posh Ocean View Room to sit in the large soaking tubs, relax and gaze out over the ocean while sipping sparkling cider on your balcony. Not a bad way to spend some time before the baby arrives!

Now that the madness of Week 1 is over (and the embarrassed Falcons can hang their helmets for the season), it’s time to get down to football business: The best versus, well, the not best. This weekend we’ll see Tim “Touched by an Angel” Tebow battle it out against the genetically-blessed Tom Brady (I swear, I really am a Giants fan); Big Blue is heading up north to face the practically indomitable Green Bay Packers; and the quietly looming 49ers are playing host to (the also indomitable) New Orleans Saints. The most curious match up, though, is happening in Baltimore, where the Ravens are taking on the…err…Texans. (Is it bad I keep forgetting they’re involved?) We scouted the home fields for some sweet hotel picks for this weekend’s epic games.

HOUSTON TEXANS VS. BALTIMORE RAVENS

Where to Sleep: Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill; Washington, D.C.

The neighborhood at the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill; Washington, D.C.

Why Here: Forgo Baltimore for D.C., as its just about a 40-minute train ride from the capital city — and offers up plenty more to do. (Sorry, Baltimore! We still heart you.) And as a bonus, the Hyatt Regency is just a five-minute walk from the train station you’ll need to hop on to get to the game. The hotel offers up a huge heated, indoor pool — great for families — along with an amazing fitness center and soundproof, guest-room walls. (Great for couples, perhaps?) Plus, the property is in prime sightseeing territory, practically steps from the Capitol Building — so make sure to snap a few great pics before heading out of town.

DENVER BRONCOS VS. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS

Where to Sleep: The Westin Copley Place; Boston, MA

The indoor pool at the Westin Copley Square; Boston, MA

Why Here: Because Gillette Stadium (home to the Pats) is actually located in Foxborough, about a 40-minute drive from the city, you’ll wanna stay as inland as possible while still soaking up the city of Boston. Lucky for you, that means camping out in the tony Back Bay area (as it’ll save you the most driving time) at the Westin Copley Place. The property itself offers a little bit of something for everyone: Six on-site restaurants, a great spa, an indoor pool and you can bring your pet for the weekend — free of charge, natch. Would a true Patriot have it any other way?

NEW ORLEANS SAINTS VS. SAN FRANCISCO 49′ERS

The Urban Tavern at the Hilton San Francisco Union Square; San Francisco, CA

Why Here: Although windy Candlestick Park is south of Union Square, you’re going to want to stay where all of the action of the city is — and San Francisco‘s Union Square is certainly a tourist (and shopping!) hub. The Hilton offers one of the city’s best bars — Urban Tavern, which is probably the only watering hole we’ve seen that’s both cozy and slick, and serves up yummy grub along with cold brews. Sounds perfect for a post-game drink, no? The only catch, though, is that rooms are unimpressive, which shouldn’t matter if you’re touring town or at the game — undoubtedly the hottest match-up of the weekend.

NEW YORK GIANTS VS. GREEN BAY PACKERS

Although Green Bay isn’t yet an Oyster destination, we’re pretty confident about one thing: Pack warm clothes.

For the party-girl: Canyon Ranch Hotel & Spa Miami Beach in Miami

Some of you will undoubtedly be hitting up the clubs in Miami Beach for a wild New Year’s Eve. So for all you party girls out there, the Canyon Ranch Miami Beach is the perfect choice: It has a slightly more relaxed vibe than other Canyon Ranch resorts (so there will be no judgment for your escapades the night before) and it offers about 40 free fitness classes everyday (so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to burn off the calories from the New Year’s Eve champagne toast). The Canyon Ranch brand is synonymous with good health and the Miami Beach outlet is no different; guests sign waivers that they will not smoke while at the resort, the restaurant serves healthy options off of a menu with detailed nutritional information next to every item, and the massive fitness center includes dozens of cardio machines and a rock-climbing wall. Best of all, starting on January 1st, the hotel offers a four-night Your Stay, Your Way package for guests staying in room types of the Ocean Palm suite or higher, which entitles them to a $400 credit that can be used towards the spa, the shop, and the restaurant. So after a sunset yoga class or a beach conditioning workout, you can order an icy, alcoholic beverage by the pool (albeit low-cal and flavored with acai juice) – hey, you’re still a party girl at heart.

For the laid-back mama: Natura Cabanas in the Dominican Republic

Those looking to start their new year in a serene spot, away from the hustle and bustle of life back home, will love the serene, secluded location of Natura Cabanas in the Dominican Republic. Naturas Cabanas features eco-friendly bungalows, without AC or TVs, a clean, private beach, and a small, but luxurious, al fresco spa. Guests come for the low-key, intimate atmosphere and Natura Cabanas is a great option for a healthy start to the new year: The beach is a nice spot for a vigorous swim (waves can be rough, but not too rough that it becomes unsafe) and is just a short paddle from surfer haven Playa Encuentro, the two on-site restaurants serve up healthy treats like fruit-filled crepes and fresh seafood, and the excellent yoga studio, overlooking the ocean, offers daily yoga and Pilates classes. It even offers yoga for kids on Wednesdays and Saturdays! The hotel can also arrange excursions to nearby waterfalls and horseback riding trails for an extra dose of action. And all of this comes at remarkably reasonable rates (which include a large, healthy breakfast). Guests pay per person per night; for couples, it starts at only $90 per person per night and children (ages two to 12) are only $40 per child per night. Guests who pay with cash receive 10 percent off.

The lobby at the Viceroy Snowmass

For the ski bunny: Viceroy Snowmass in Snowmass Village

Skiing is one of those activities during which you’re burning calories without even realizing it, and the slopes — especially those in Snowmass — can really be a place to see-and-be-seen during the new year! (Celebrities such as Kate Hudson, Goldie Hawn, and Zoe Saladana were all spotted in Snowmass last holiday season.) About 20 minutes from downtown Aspen, Snowmass Village is Aspen’s equally luxurious, but slightly more understated, neighbor. The village sits at the base of the massive Snowmass Mountain, where active types can ski, snowboard, and snowshoe. And there are slopes for every level of skier, so even if you don’t ski, why not start now? Especially since the luxurious Viceroy Snowmass, with a prime ski-in, ski-out location and a phenomenal ski valet service, offers a package for skiers that you’ll want to get your hands on. The Simply Ski package, for guests staying four or more nights, includes accommodations in a studio residence and a $175 daily resort credit, so you won’t need to worry about meals or shopping – you can spend all day skiing! And then spend your après-ski hours in the 7,000-square-foot spa or the heated outdoor pool for a little R&R.

The fitness center at the Auberge Du Soleil

For the wine-loving lady: Auberge Du Soleil in Napa Valley

So drinking a ton of wine may not be the best way to work on your health. But then again, some wine in moderation can’t hurt. In fact, studies have shown that red wine can actually be good for you (again, in moderation). Not only is it high in antioxidants, but red wine can help reduce the risk of everything from cancer to the common cold! So this new year’s, why don’t you head to Napa Valley where the plenitude of wine, and the fresh outdoor air, can do a body good? Guests at the 50-room Auberge Du Soleil, a luxury inn, have access to lush and peaceful grounds, a 7,000-square-foot spa, a lovely pool (great for doing laps), tennis courts, a private yoga studio, and a large, airy fitness center with French doors opening to more equipment on a wraparound deck – plenty of options for getting a good workout in before the wine tasting. Though this luxury resort is pricey, the Suite Life package offers a lot of value, with a two-night stay, a four-course meal for two, a free massage, and breakfast both mornings.

The pool at the Gran Bahia Principe Cayo Levantado

For the island chick: Gran Bahia Principe Cayo Levantado on Cayo Levantado, a private Carribean island

Here’s the active getaway for the island – that is, private island – chick. Start your new year off in style by whisking away to the Gran Bahia Principe Cavo Levantado, a luxury, all-inclusive resort on its own private island off the coast of the Dominican Republic. Once there, you can start getting yourself in shape while enjoying the sand, sun, and tropical breezes in the middle of the Caribbean Sea. The resort features classic amenities, like gorgeous pools, a large fitness center, and a scenic beach (with windsurfing, kayaks, catamaran rides, snorkeling, and scuba-diving lessons), but it also features a jogging circuit, tennis courts, and a studio with Pliates classes– all right at your fingertips on your private island retreat! And after a day of full-on exercise, you can dance the night away at the outdoor discotheque that stays open until 2 a.m. (the bar shuts down at midnight, but hey, you don’t need those sugary cocktails anyways). For the month of January, rates start at just $159/night – definitely a steal for a 4-star, all-inclusive resort!

For the golfer gal: The Ritz Carlton, Half Moon Bay in Half Moon Bay, CA

So what if the folks on the golf course are usually 70-year-old retired men? It simply shows that it’s a sport you can continue to enjoy your whole life long! And it’s certainly a full-body workout (especially if you skip the golf cart and carry your bags sans caddy). Though golf can be excruciatingly frustrating, there’s a serenity to it at times – especially at the two courses at The Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay. Perched on a cliff overlooking the Pacific, the Ritz-Carlton’s 18-hole Old Course, designed by Arnold Palmer, is a challenging 72-par course, and the same can be said for the Ocean Course, ranked among the top courses in California. The Legends Golf Package, offered every year, includes accommodations and unlimited golf for up to two players! You’ll really get your workout. But if you tire of the links, there are still plenty of activities to get your heart-rate going at Half Moon Bay. The resort, ranked by Tennis Magazine as one of the “Top 50 U.S. Tennis Resorts,” features tennis courts with daily clinics and the concierge can set up everything from horseback riding tours to surfing lessons.

Everyone promised that you would have skiing down in no time, right? Instead, you got stuck on the “Magic Carpet” and could barely manage the “pizza” while ski-clad tots were gracefully whizzing past you. Trust us, we’ve been there. But after many failed attempts at tricky ski maneuvers like getting off the ski-lift without face planting, we’ve learned a new trick: how to find the coolest non-skiing activities in ski towns. In fact, ski towns have a lot more to offer than just the slopes — we promise! So for those of you who got roped into a ski-centric vacation, check out our favorite non-skier activities in nine ski destinations below.

Vail

Ice-skate: If you’d rather not hit the slopes, ice-skating is a great way to still get outdoors and get your heart rate pumping. There is an ice-skating rink right out the front door of The Arrabelle in Vail Square, with views of the slopes, the village, and the massive Christmas tree.

Go on a Dogsled Tour: While your friends are out enjoying the fresh powder on the slopes, you can be too — but in the comfort of a horse, er, dog-drawn sleigh. Winterhawk Dogsled Adventures runs daily tours in Alaskan husky-drawn sleds; the basic tour explores the expansive grounds of the historic 4 Eagle Ranch, while adventure tours run across more remote terrain at a higher altitude. The Four Seasons is just a short walk from the entry-point of the Gondala.

Go on a dining tour: Whistler Village has some top-notch restaurants.
It may not be as luxurious as the nearby Mandarin Oriental, but the West Copley Place should not be overlooked by the hardcore Black Friday shopper: It’s attached to The Copley Place Shopping Mall via skywalk, home to some of Boston’s best high-end shopping, such as Tiffany’s, Louis Vuitton, Burberry and Neiman Marcus.

Wynn Las Vegas

Vegas may have invented the hotel as an all-in-one destination, but the Wynn Las Vegas reinvented the shopping aspect of it. The shopping is about high-end as the hotel, though (think Rolex and Oscar de la Renta).

Shoppers who are into gambling at blackjack tables as much as they are into braving Black Friday crowds are probably already aware of the Bellagio’s fantastic shopping. Like the Wynn, it’s upscale, but anyone spending the day after Thanksgiving in Las Vegas probably wouldn’t mind picking up gifts at Prada and Dior.

The Ritz-Carlton Chicago, a Four Seasons Hotel

The Drake Hotel

The Chanel Store at the Drake Hotel

Chicago shoppers who are more into historic ambiance than spa pampering should probably opt for the Drake Hotel. Even though there’s plenty of amazing shopping in the nearby Gold Coast area, the lobby already houses a shopping arcade with a Chanel store (don’t worry: we won’t tell if you pick something up for yourself).

As the Hotel-Tell All, Oyster is very well-traveled when it comes to hotels. We’ve seen it all — whether good or bad. Let it be known: after visiting thousands of hotels, the tiny fees, poor service, and mediocre food starts to get irritating.

11. Valet Charges

No parking? Don’t charge through the roof for valet parking. You know it’s our only choice and makes us bitter.

10. The Toilet Flush Demo

We appreciate you showing us how to flush the toilet upon the room check-in tour, but come on! We’ve been able to do that by ourselves for a long time now.

9. The “Complimentary In-Room Treat”

Please don’t provide a “complimentary basket” filled with treats upon room check in, and then secretly charge $3 for the biscuits lying right next to the basket.

8. The Resort Fee

We’d love to be provided with an actual definition, explanation, and breakdown of what exactly “The Resort Fee” is. We understand all hotels do it these days, but if all your friends were jumping off of a bridge, would you?

The Fairfax at Embassy Row, Washington, D.C.

7. The Lounge Chair Reserve

When hotels allow guests to save lounge chairs by the pool by putting down a towel at 6 am, it makes other guests feel unworthy. We were under the impression that vacation was a time to relax – just because we’re not in mood for an early-morning-lounge-chair-brawl doesn’t mean we don’t deserve a chair of our own. If you’re not there, you’re not lounging.

Lounge chairs by the pool at Treasure Island

6. Lounge Chair Charges

Speaking of lounge chairs, charging for them and umbrellas is just stingy. We’ll be more likely to give a bigger tip if we’re not forced to pay for an amenity that should come with the hotel.

The Lounge Chairs at The St. Regis Atlanta

5. The $10 Bottle of Water

We know that same bottle costs $1.59 at 7-11. You’re not fooling anybody.

4. Self-Written Reviews

Listen, we’re Oyster. We know the real reviews from the fake ones. And with this recent New York Times article, you better be careful.

3. The Photo Fakeout

We’ve mastered the art of investigating Photo Fakeouts – Oyster’s most popular feature that exposes hotels’ deceiving marketing photos. Heads up: if your main pool is the size of a kiddie pool, no need to angle the camera so the viewers think it’s an Olympic size lap pool. We’ll likely call you out on it.

2. Mini Bars

Where to begin…

1. WiFi Charges

Get with the times. It’s like toilet paper and oxygen. Also, if WiFi is provided free of charge, give us a good signal. There is nothing more frustrating than slow or unusable Internet.

If you’re citified but like to hike, a foodie but ride your bike more than your car, or use your Patagonia Solar Wind Jacket for a city blizzard, you can consider yourself Urban Rugged by Oyster’s standards.

These destinations and hotels are rustic-chic with lots to do, whether it’s hiking, cycling, shopping, going to art galleries or eating in top notch restaurants. At these eight hotels, you can always tap into your natural — and metropolitan — side.

The Travaasa Hana, Maui, Hawaii

The Travaasa Hana hotel overlooking Hana Bay delivers rustic luxury in the middle of Maui’s lush, secluded east coast. It has incredible service, a long list of stuff to do and only 70 rooms on acres of uncrowded property. The rooms are large, clean, sleekly furnished — and stripped of TVs, clocks and radios. Though it’s hard to reach, it’s worth the trip. The gorgeous, secluded location near hikes, waterfalls and beaches, excellent cuisine using local products, one of the most beautiful spa facilities on the island and unmatched personalized touches make this hotel one of your best choices in Hawaii.

Campton Place Taj Hotel, San Francisco

Housed in two adjoining century-old buildings, the 110-room luxury boutique Campton Place Taj Hotel is a revelation in bustling Union Square. Despite its stature, the hotel feels surprisingly casual. The sprightly doorman chats with you as he leads you to the small, gleaming lobby full of fresh-cut orchids and paintings by local artists. The hotel is an enclave of posh rooms and pampering service in a dense city. Its top-notch service and luxe room amenities make it one of the city’s most special hotels.

InterContinental Montelucia Resort & Spa, Phoenix

The Montelucia is located in the upscale Paradise Valley section of Scottsdale. Guests interested in hiking can walk to Echo Canyon, where a popular, steep trail leads to the top of Camelback Mountain. Numerous shops, art galleries, nightclubs and restaurants are a 10-minute drive away in Old Town Scottsdale. This Spanish villa-style property with great views of Camelback is one of Scottsdale’s most luxurious desert retreats. The grounds feature pretty floral-lined walkways and arched entrances, and sophisticated rooms have lots of Spanish-inspired details, including dark woods and big mirrors.

The Sebastian, Vail

The luxury boutique Sebastian resort opened in Vail in 2010, and prices are often more than fair for what you get for this grand mountain vibe. The beautiful, high-end mountain decor, particularly in the airy lobby and cozy library, are anything but cabin kitsch. The two great restaurants, the farm-to-table Block 16 and a chic lounge provide plenty of entertainment. The outdoor pool, four Jacuzzis and an upscale spa give you just what you need for a relaxing stay. It’s within walking distance of Vail Village, the slopes and the hotel’s own Base Camp (with ski rentals and a cafe).

Hotel deLuxe, Portland

If channeling James Cagney or Bette Davis while sipping an Old Fashioned is on your bucket list, consider the Hotel deLuxe. Decor at this upscale, 130-room boutique is inspired by the Golden Era of Hollywood, where Art Deco lamps, black-and-white photographs and heavy drapes meet modern luxuries such as flat-screen TVs and iPod docks. Even the key cards scream Tinseltown. Rooms have a vintage style that is cheerful rather than sultry, with plush beds and a color scheme of lively, bright pastels. Hotel deLuxe is located in Downtown Portland, within walking distance of Portland’s Waterfront and the popular Pearl District. Forest Park, 5,000 acres of pure nature, can be found on the northwest hills of Downtown Portland. It’s one of the nation’s largest urban parks and has plenty of biking and hiking trails for adventurous travelers. Portland is very pedestrian-friendly and is known as one of the best cycling cities in the country, so visitors should take advantage of the car-free setting.

The Hacienda & Spa at Hotel Santa Fe

The Hacienda at Hotel Santa Fe delivers a private, gorgeous retreat on four gorgeous acres — just six blocks from the Plaza. Santa Fe sits at an elevation of 7,000 feet at the southern edge of the Rockies. The Hacienda is the only hotel in town owned by Native Americans, and the extensive display of Native art gives the public areas a gallery feel. The suites are large and luxurious. Hiking in summer and skiing in winter are great reasons to visit, and Santa Fe is also renowned for its local art.

Loden Hotel, Vancouver

This 77-room luxury boutique has a modern, stylish feel and a popular French bistro. The large, sleek rooms may be the highlight, with subtle earth tones, floor-to-ceiling windows and decadent marble bathrooms. The Downtown Vancouver location is convenient as well — The Loden Hotel is in Coal Harbour, on the eastern side of downtown near the harbor and the Vancouver Convention Center. There is also a SkyRail line just a couple blocks from the hotel.

L’Auberge de Sedona

L’Auberge de Sedona has one of the most stunning natural settings in not just the Southwest, but the country, with the picturesque Oak Creek running underneath shady trees, and Sedona’s soaring red rocks suspended in the background. The 87 guest rooms and woodsy cottages are spread across 11 acres, allowing guests plenty of privacy; most come with fireplaces and private decks. Sedona is most famous for its stunning red rocks, which are particularly beautiful in the glow of sunrise and sunset and have formed the backdrop for many a western film. The beautiful desert-meets-forest scenery has, unsurprisingly, attracted many artists, and Sedona has become known for its numerous art galleries and arts and craft shops. It’s also a first-rate destination for active travelers, who want to take in the views while biking, hiking or horseback riding.

Did you know Mark Twain wrote two of his books in The Willard Washington D.C. hotel? Or that The Plaza in New York City was the setting for Barefoot in the Park, with a young Jane Fonda and Robert Redford? Some of the coolest, most historic hotels still stand today. While some of them have undergone drastic cosmetic alteration, many, surprisingly, have hardly changed at all.

Please note: All historic photos can be credited to the Library of Congress Prints & Photographs database.

It’ll be hard to find a more interesting historic hotel in the States. It was in this very hotel that Mark Twain wrote two of his books in the early 20th century. A staple in D.C. culture, The Willard used to be referred to as the “center of Washington” by American author Nathaniel Hawthorne. In 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. created a draft of his “I Have a Dream” speech while staying in a room here. Other notable guests include Charles Dickens, Buffalo Bill, and multiple presidents.

Imagine staying in the building where Malcolm X and Sacco and Vanzetti served some jail time. Built in 1851 as the Charles Street Jail, Liberty Hotel now occupies the building. The jail closed in the late 1900s after the U.S. District Court ruled that the jail violated the prisoners’ constitutional rights by overcrowding. Now, the hotel plays on the incarceration theme in unique, fun ways by incorporating celebrity mug shots, “Solitary” key rings on doorknobs instead of “Do Not Disturb” signs, and an exhibit showcasing the building’s history and restoration details.

Fontainebleau Resort Miami Beach

Back in the ’70s, the Black Tuna Gang — an American marijuana-smuggling organization — operated from a suite in this hotel designed by Morris Lapidus. That being said, the Fontainebleau Hotel is one of the most historically and architecturally important hotels on Miami Beach. The swimming pool was a setting for a scene in the 1959 film A Hole in the Head, with Frank Sinatra. Sinatra also videotaped a special in 1960 to welcome back Elvis Presley from a two-year military service in Germany.

The Plaza, New York City

When The Plaza opened in 1907, a room cost a mere $2.50 per night, which equals about $60 to $70 today. Now a room can cost more than $900 per night. The Plaza has long been a New York City landmark, The Beatles stayed here during their first visit to the U.S. in 1964. The hotel is also being the setting for scenes in multiple novels and films, including Kay Thompson’s Eloise, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, and (modern day) Bride Wars.

Renaissance Mayflower Hotel, Washington, D.C.

Franklin Roosevelt lived in Suite 776 before being inaugurated, and delivered one of his most memorable speeches here. Does “We have nothing to fear but fear itself” ring a bell? President Harry Truman also lived here throughout his first 90 days as president. Another interesting fact is that Washington’s first blackout drill was staged at the Mayflower in 1942, after air raid sirens and first aid stations were installed on each floor.

Palace Hotel, San Francisco

Although the original Palace Hotel, built in 1875, was demolished after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, the “New” Palace Hotel opened in 1909 and quickly resumed the landmark’s role as being a staple in San Francisco culture. Some interesting events have occurred here, including the opening session of the United Nations in 1945 and the death of President Warren G. Harding in 1923.

Congress Plaza Hotel, Chicago

Known for its supposed paranormal activity, some claim that Al Capone, who reportedly once owned the hotel and used it as his headquarters, haunts the halls of this Chicago budget hotel. Opened in 1893, the hotel has undergone multiple renovations and expansion over the years. The hotel has hosted various notable guests, including presidents, celebrities, and foreign dignitaries.

A grande dame hotel that’s hosted presidents and diplomats since 1901, the 332-room Willard is a D.C. icon dripping with history just two blocks from the White House. The exceptional staff and opulent lobby compensate for rooms that lack the flash of those at the newly renovated W Washington D.C. next door. Though the hotel sits on a relatively busy street, the street is lined with trees that boast beautiful reds, yellows, and oranges during the fall, and the Willard is only two blocks from the White House and the Mall.

And its location on the southern edge of Central Park is ideal for leaf peepers. Book the Central Park King Room, Central Park Queen Room, or Central Park Deluxe Suite for views.

Castle Hill Resort and Spa, Vermont

The quaint 10 rooms of Castle Hill Resort and Spa offer guests a taste of Old World charm, like Tiffany lamps, small standing tubs, and (somewhat creaky) hardwood floors. These intimate spaces are polished off with modern-day amenities, like free WiFi and designer toiletries. The property’s outdoor spaces and architectural details are fairytale-esque — lush gardens, ivy-covered stone walls, fog-topped mountain views, and detailed wooden awnings — and it’s just a short drive from scenic hikes.
Omni Shoreham Hotel, Washington D.C.

For the most part, the Shoreham is a hulking, fairly bland-looking 834-room convention-focused business hotel. But there’s more to this historic hotel. Evening turndowns; a beautiful outdoor pool; a great gym; a quaint but still convenient location just north of Dupont Circle; a haunted room on the 8th floor, nice leafy views from many rooms — it’s an excellent choice for the price.

One of the cheapest hotels in Cambridge, the Hyatt Regency could get away with being a bare-bones business hotel. In fact, it’s better than that: The rooms were renovated in 2010, there are quality amenities (including an indoor pool and a well-equipped gym), and it has a charming location overlooking the Charles River. It’s a great value for those who don’t need to be in the thick of things. A number of rooms have spectacular views of the fall colors along the Charles River. If you get stuck with a Cambridge view, just head to the sun deck off of the 75-foot atrium pool to take in the colors of fall.

The Mandarin Oriental, located across Columbus Circle from Central Park, offers a dizzying array of modern luxuries –a 75-foot pool, one of the city’s best spas, sweeping views from nearly every common area, and superb on-site fine-dining options, to name a few — even as it upholds traditional values and outstanding service.
The Norwich Inn, Vermont

The historic Norwich Inn (where President James Monroe and Dr. Suess have both stayed) is a quaint, well-kept hotel with just 38 rooms. Some rooms may be small, particularly those in the Main House, but they have a cozy New England feel, with floral wallpaper, 4-poster beds, and exposed brick — along with modern amenities like flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi. The inn is frequented mainly by those visiting Dartmouth College, just a mile away, and those who want to explore other nearby areas of Vermont will need a car (parking is free). The hotel is located in Norwich which embraces the New England small-town feel — many historic homes line the streets, there aren’t any chain stores or restaurants, and one of its main attractions is the beautiful foilage in the fall.
A no-nonsense luxury hotel for the masses just steps away from the White House, the JW Marriott has a shopping mall-like multistory lobby and 772 cozy guestrooms. It’s modestly plush, but in a populist way — especially when compared with the place across the street, the Intercontinental Willard, which is richer and more exclusive. The Marriott is just around the corner from the White House and just blocks from beautiful parks.

With large, playfully furnished, the 236-room Hotel Marlowe is one of Cambridge’s most family-friendly hotels. Its neighbor, the Royal Sonesta Hotel, is cheaper and has a pool, but the Marlowe offers a boutique-like feel at a reasonable price, with personality to spare. A number of its rooms — such as the Studio Suite — overlook the tree-lined Charles River, a beautiful site in the fall.

The Pointe at Castle Hill, Vermont

While the 96 rooms of The Pointe at Castle Hill are clean and manageable, they fluctuate wildly from charmingly antique to generically modern. Some have burgundy walls, large four-poster beds and seriously old toilets, while other suites are bright with full kitchens and large, modern bathrooms. It certainly won’t top the most luxurious list, but those hitting the slopes at nearby Okemo Mountain during ski season may find it to be a suitable après-ski relaxation spot and the views are gorgeous, no matter the season.
Tucked away in a leafy residential neighborhood near the National Zoo, D.C.’s biggest hotel is a blur of conventioneers — huge meetings are its bread and butter. The Washington Marriott Wardman has lovely grounds, a decent fitness center, and pleasant common areas; but in this price range, leisure travelers can usually do better than its run-of-the-mill chain rooms and (somewhat) out-of-the-way location. Those looking for leafy views can find them, though, in many of the rooms as well as from the glass-walled elevator.
