Preparing for the birth of a child is one of the most exciting things that can happen to a couple. Even if it’s just testing paint swatches in the nursery, lots of time and energy is spent getting everything ready for the big day. And while the preparations themselves may seem hectic, they pale in comparison to the duties that come along with caring for a newborn infant.

This is why the trend of “babymooning” began to catch on in the mid-2000s. A quick, romantic trip is a great way for couples spend an intimate weekend together before the arrival of their child. Mothers and fathers-to-be treat themselves to pampering spa treatments, cozy rooms, and relaxation in a last hurrah before parenthood begins. Being the hotel experts, we rounded up some of our favorite hotels for the perfect babymoons. Because take it from us when we say that happy, relaxed parents make the entire process easier.

Mount View Hotel & Spa (Calistoga, CA)

Heading to a small B&B is a win/win for expectant couples: the vibe is more relaxed, the atmosphere more romantic and the service personalized. The Mount View Hotel & Spa takes it a step further with the “Oh Baby!” welcome package: for $270, each parent is treated to a 50 minute massage (including a pre-natal option), a box of chocolate truffles, sparkling cider, two souvenir champagne flutes and a special shirt that helps expectant mothers massage their baby. Need more? The package also includes a $10 “craving card,” where hotel staff will fetch mothers-to-be anything from olives to Oreos from local stores. While we can’t suggest that couples partake in the wine tasting tours that dominate the area, we’re fairly confident that you’ll appreciate the calm surroundings of northern Napa Valley.

Mandarin Oriental, New York (New York, NY)

The New Yorker’s unofficial ethos is “do it right or don’t bother at all,” which covers everything from jaywalking to Japanese food. It should come as no surprise, then, that hotels such as Mandarin Oriental, New York have gone to great lengths to provide expectant mothers with the care and service they need. The on-site spa (arguably one of the best in the city) caters to pregnant guests with a specialized 80-minute maternity massage. Therapists meet with clients beforehand to tailor the massage to their needs. The procedure itself makes use of specialized pillows and lotions with the ultimate goal of helping the mother-to-be feel comfortable again. Once done with their treatments, couples can take advantage of Columbus Circle: they’re just steps away from some of the most celebrated dining in New York at Per Se and Masa, as well as some serious high-end shopping.

The Parker Palm Springs (Palm Springs, CA)

When it comes down to it, Palm Springs is one of those destinations that seems like it was designed with expectant mothers in mind. Sure, it’s in the middle of the desert, but it’s only a short drive away from L.A. (or a short flight from major cities on the West Coast). The town’s wellness vibe perfectly suits babymooning couples looking for more poolside relaxation that sightseeing or activity. The Parker Palm Springs may be one of the best options in the area: guests can purchase a $200 spa package to be used towards a pre-natal message for mom as well as a massage for the dad-to-be. You can spend the rest of your weekend sipping free lemonade in a poolside cabana, swinging in your patio hammock or warming up by a fire pit. And with Jessica Simpson recently babymooning at the property, you never know who you’ll end up stretching next to in yoga class.

Before you get up in arms with this suggestion, remember that not all trips to Sin City have to be like The Hangover. Vegas is only a five-hour drive or quick flight from L.A. and can provide the much-needed change of scenery expectant couples crave. We recommend THEHotel at Mandalay Bay: it provides easy access to all that Vegas has to offer – you know, the killer dining, endless shopping and outrageous spas – all tucked quietly steps off of the crazy bustle of the Strip. If the massive rooms and pool area isn’t enough, the phenomenal on-site Bathhouse Spa should be reason enough for babymooning couples to book here. And of course, we won’t tell if dad sneaks off for some quick blackjack while mom-to-be is taking a nap.

Just because you’re on the East Coast doesn’t mean you can’t have an island babymoon. Consider Bermuda: Flight times are short (just two hours from New York or 90 minutes from Washington, D.C.), making it ideal for expectant mothers who are craving a secluded beach but can’t stand the idea of a long-haul flight. Tucked away from Bermuda’s busiest attractions, the Rosewood Tucker’s Point is ideal for couples looking to steep themselves in luxury. It has an expansive private beach, three luxurious pools and a 12,000-square foot spa that offers a Mother-to-Be Massage (amongst myriad other indulgent treatments). Not only are rooms spacious with million-dollar views, but the bathrooms are very expectant-mother-friendly with walk-in showers and large soaking tubs. Babymooners can also take advantage of the 24-hour concierge, Sterling service, and the four on-site restaurants.

SoCal residents are used to taking advantage of the consistently gorgeous weather and nature that’s right in their backyards. Babymooners looking for a “staycation” style getaway from the bustle of L.A. can head to Orange County for a few nights in the St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort. While the name is a little misleading (the beach is actually a mile and a half away), the hotel can provide expectant couples with an insanely relaxing pool area and an atmosphere that’s in tune with surrounding nature. The hotel no longer offers specific babymoon packages, but a $400 package for the award-winning Spa Gaucin can get both mothers and fathers-to-be a massage and other treatments (prenatal massages are offered, naturally). Throw in a few nights in a posh Ocean View Room to sit in the large soaking tubs, relax and gaze out over the ocean while sipping sparkling cider on your balcony. Not a bad way to spend some time before the baby arrives!

Now that the madness of Week 1 is over (and the embarrassed Falcons can hang their helmets for the season), it’s time to get down to football business: The best versus, well, the not best. The hotel offers up a huge heated, indoor pool — great for families — along with an amazing fitness center and soundproof, guest-room walls. (Great for couples, perhaps?) Plus, the property is in prime sightseeing territory, practically steps from the Capitol Building — so make sure to snap a few great pics before heading out of town.

DENVER BRONCOS VS. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS

The property itself offers a little bit of something for everyone: Six on-site restaurants, a great spa, an indoor pool and you can bring your pet for the weekend — free of charge, natch. Would a true Patriot have it any other way?

NEW ORLEANS SAINTS VS. SAN FRANCISCO 49′ERS

Why Here: Although windy Candlestick Park is south of Union Square, you’re going to want to stay where all of the action of the city is — and San Francisco‘s Union Square is certainly a tourist (and shopping!) hub. The Hilton offers one of the city’s best bars — Urban Tavern, which is probably the only watering hole we’ve seen that’s both cozy and slick, and serves up yummy grub along with cold brews. Sounds perfect for a post-game drink, no?  The only catch, though, is that rooms are unimpressive, which shouldn’t matter if you’re touring town or at the game — undoubtedly the hottest match-up of the weekend.

NEW YORK GIANTS VS. GREEN BAY PACKERS

Although Green Bay isn’t yet an Oyster destination, we’re pretty confident about one thing: Pack warm clothes.

Breckenridge

One Ski Hill Place, a Rock Resort

Ride a roller-coaster: You weren’t expecting to see this as an option, were you? Well, the Breckenridge Ski Resort has built a new roller-coaster, called the Gold Run Alpine Coaster, at the base of Peak 8. With 2,500 feet of track, the coaster allows riders to control their speed as they zip through the forest and over ski runs. The roller-coaster is open year-round and those staying at One Ski Hill Place, located on Peak 8 with ski-in/ski-out valet, have easy access to it.

Mountain Thunder Lodge

Tour a mine: Breckenridge is home to Country Boy Mine, a restored historic gold mine that was founded in 1887. Visitors to the mine can embark on an underground tour (complete with hard hats), pan for gold in Eureka Creek, and even slide down the 55-foot ore chute. The Moutain Thunder Lodge is less than a 10-minute drive from the mine.

Whistler

Four Seasons Resort Whistler

Sightsee from the Peak 2 Peak Gondala: The world record-breaking Peak 2 Peak Gondala stretches nearly three miles between Whistler and the Blackcomb Mountains. The gondola grants passengers a gorgeous bird’s-eye view of the slopes with windows on all sides, and once at the top of the mountain, there are several restaurants with equally expansive and stunning views. The Four Seasons is just a short walk from the entry-point of the Gondala.

The Westin Resort & Spa, Whistler

Go on a dining tour: Whistler Village has some top-notch restaurants. With over 30 options, it can be hard to try them all — unless you hit a few in one night, of course. The Whistler Tasting Tours offer a variety of dining tours throughout Whistler Village, where guides bring groups to multiple restaurants over a few hours’ time. So whether you want a four-course meal from luxurious, fine-dining picks, or would prefer to skip dinner and treat your palate to a multitude of desserts, you’ll be able to do just that. The Westin Resort & Spa is just a two-minute walk from the heart of Whistler Village, where the tours meet.

Vancouver

The Hotel at Terminal City Club

Party it up: Vancouver is a great ski destination for non-skiers; all three of the ski mountains (Cypress, Grouse, and Seymour) are less than 45 minutes from Downtown Vancouver, a cosmopolitan city with plenty to offer. Vancouver’s nightlife is concentrated in the historic Gastown area, the city’s original ”downtown.” Gastown’s brick-paved streets are lined by restaurants, bars, and night clubs, many of which don’t shut down until three a.m.. The Hotel at Terminal City Club is just a short drive from Gastown.

Moda Hotel

Visit the Vancouver Art Gallery: Located on bustling Robson Square, the Vancouver Art Gallery is the fifth-largest art gallery in Canada, with over 10,000 pieces in the permanent collection. Housed in a stately former courthouse, the art gallery focuses on works of famous British Columbian artists such as Emily Carr, but the museum also has has an extensive collection of Chagall’s works and hosts visiting exhibitions throughout the year. The Moda Hotel is just one block from the museum.

Catch a Sundance screening: If you time your Park City vacation just right, you can arrive along with a truckload of celebrities in town for the Sundance Film Festival.  The coming-up festival runs from January 19 to January 29, 2012 and most of the action (and celeb sightings) takes place along Main Street. The Jackson Hole Wildlife Safari takes safari-goers out in snow vehicles equipped with binoculars and hot coffee. Snowshoe: Snowshoeing is a popular winter sport in Jackson Hole (and almost every ski destination, for that matter). Spring Creek Ranch offers snowshoe rentals so guests can run free on the nearly 1,000 acres of wildlife refuge, with stunning views of the Tetons. For the less adventurous types, horseback riding trails are transformed into snowshoeing trails during the winter months.

Check out a show: The historic Wheeler Opera House, opened in 1889, hosts many performances throughout the year: everything from operas to Broadway shows to Aspen Music Festival events. If you’re not there, you’re not lounging.

The luxury boutique Sebastian resort opened in Vail in 2010, and prices are often more than fair for what you get for this grand mountain vibe. The beautiful, high-end mountain decor, particularly in the airy lobby and cozy library, are anything but cabin kitsch. The two great restaurants, the farm-to-table Block 16 and a chic lounge provide plenty of entertainment. The outdoor pool, four Jacuzzis and an upscale spa give you just what you need for a relaxing stay. It’s within walking distance of Vail Village, the slopes and the hotel’s own Base Camp (with ski rentals and a cafe).

If channeling James Cagney or Bette Davis while sipping an Old Fashioned is on your bucket list, consider the Hotel deLuxe. Hotel deLuxe is located in Downtown Portland, within walking distance of Portland’s Waterfront and the popular Pearl District. Forest Park, 5,000 acres of pure nature, can be found on the northwest hills of Downtown Portland. Portland is very pedestrian-friendly and is known as one of the best cycling cities in the country, so visitors should take advantage of the car-free setting.

The Hacienda at Hotel Santa Fe delivers a private, gorgeous retreat on four gorgeous acres — just six blocks from the Plaza. Santa Fe sits at an elevation of 7,000 feet at the southern edge of the Rockies. The Hacienda is the only hotel in town owned by Native Americans, and the extensive display of Native art gives the public areas a gallery feel. The suites are large and luxurious. Hiking in summer and skiing in winter are great reasons to visit, and Santa Fe is also renowned for its local art.

This 77-room luxury boutique has a modern, stylish feel and a popular French bistro. The large, sleek rooms may be the highlight, with subtle earth tones, floor-to-ceiling windows and decadent marble bathrooms. Did you know Mark Twain wrote two of his books in The Willard Washington D.C. hotel? Or that The Plaza in New York City was the setting for Barefoot in the Park, with a young Jane Fonda and Robert Redford? Some of the coolest, most historic hotels still stand today. While some of them have undergone drastic cosmetic alteration, many, surprisingly, have hardly changed at all.

The Willard Washington D.C.

It’ll be hard to find a more interesting historic hotel in the States. It was in this very hotel that Mark Twain wrote two of his books in the early 20th century. A staple in D.C. culture, The Willard used to be referred to as the “center of Washington” by American author Nathaniel Hawthorne. In 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. created a draft of his “I Have a Dream” speech while staying in a room here. Other notable guests include Charles Dickens, Buffalo Bill, and multiple presidents.

Liberty Hotel, Boston

Imagine staying in the building where Malcolm X and Sacco and Vanzetti served some jail time. Built in 1851 as the Charles Street Jail, Liberty Hotel now occupies the building. The jail closed in the late 1900s after the U.S. District Court ruled that the jail violated the prisoners’ constitutional rights by overcrowding. Now, the hotel plays on the incarceration theme in unique, fun ways by incorporating celebrity mug shots, “Solitary” key rings on doorknobs instead of “Do Not Disturb” signs, and an exhibit showcasing the building’s history and restoration details.

Fontainebleau Resort Miami Beach

Back in the ’70s, the Black Tuna Gang — an American marijuana-smuggling organization — operated from a suite in this hotel designed by Morris Lapidus. That being said, the Fontainebleau Hotel is one of the most historically and architecturally important hotels on Miami Beach. The swimming pool was a setting for a scene in the 1959 film A Hole in the Head, with Frank Sinatra. Sinatra also videotaped a special in 1960 to welcome back Elvis Presley from a two-year military service in Germany.

The Plaza, New York City

When The Plaza opened in 1907, a room cost a mere $2.50 per night, which equals about $60 to $70 today. Now a room can cost more than $900 per night. The Plaza has long been a New York City landmark, The Beatles stayed here during their first visit to the U.S. in 1964. The hotel is also being the setting for scenes in multiple novels and films, including Kay Thompson’s Eloise, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, and (modern day) Bride Wars.

Renaissance Mayflower Hotel, Washington, D.C.

Franklin Roosevelt lived in Suite 776 before being inaugurated, and delivered one of his most memorable speeches here. Does “We have nothing to fear but fear itself” ring a bell? President Harry Truman also lived here throughout his first 90 days as president. Another interesting fact is that Washington’s first blackout drill was staged at the Mayflower in 1942, after air raid sirens and first aid stations were installed on each floor.

Palace Hotel, San Francisco

Although the original Palace Hotel, built in 1875, was demolished after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, the “New” Palace Hotel opened in 1909 and quickly resumed the landmark’s role as being a staple in San Francisco culture. Some interesting events have occurred here, including the opening session of the United Nations in 1945 and the death of President Warren G. Harding in 1923.

Congress Plaza Hotel, Chicago

Known for its supposed paranormal activity, some claim that Al Capone, who reportedly once owned the hotel and used it as his headquarters, haunts the halls of this Chicago budget hotel. Opened in 1893, the hotel has undergone multiple renovations and expansion over the years. The hotel has hosted various notable guests, including presidents, celebrities, and foreign dignitaries.

Bought from the Ritz-Carlton in 2007, the Taj Boston holds on to the Ritz’ elegant look, but also offers some superb perks, like chenille bathrobes and free rides in the house Jaguar. Given its free business center, well-equipped gym, and ideal location bordering the Public Garden and the swank boutiques along Newbury Street, it’s an excellent luxury pick. Room categories with views of the Public Garden include Premier Rooms, Deluxe Rooms — Park View, and Commonwealth Suites.

A grande dame hotel that’s hosted presidents and diplomats since 1901, the 332-room Willard is a D.C. icon dripping with history just two blocks from the White House. The exceptional staff and opulent lobby compensate for rooms that lack the flash of those at the newly renovated W Washington D.C. next door. Though the hotel sits on a relatively busy street, the street is lined with trees that boast beautiful reds, yellows, and oranges during the fall, and the Willard is only two blocks from the White House and the Mall.

This large, luxurious Art Deco icon evokes the opulence of bygone times. With a recent redesign that put modern technological amenities in the rooms, the Essex House is moving comfortably into the future. And its location on the southern edge of Central Park is ideal for leaf peepers. Book the Central Park King Room, Central Park Queen Room, or Central Park Deluxe Suite for views.

The quaint 10 rooms of Castle Hill Resort and Spa offer guests a taste of Old World charm, like Tiffany lamps, small standing tubs, and (somewhat creaky) hardwood floors. These intimate spaces are polished off with modern-day amenities, like free WiFi and designer toiletries.  The property’s outdoor spaces and architectural details are fairytale-esque — lush gardens, ivy-covered stone walls, fog-topped mountain views, and detailed wooden awnings — and it’s just a short drive from scenic hikes. For the most part, the Shoreham is a hulking, fairly bland-looking 834-room convention-focused business hotel. But there’s more to this historic hotel. Evening turndowns; a beautiful outdoor pool; a great gym; a quaint but still convenient location just north of Dupont Circle; a haunted room on the 8th floor, nice leafy views from many rooms — it’s an excellent choice for the price.

One of the cheapest hotels in Cambridge, the Hyatt Regency could get away with being a bare-bones business hotel. In fact, it’s better than that: The rooms were renovated in 2010, there are quality amenities (including an indoor pool and a well-equipped gym), and it has a charming location overlooking the Charles River. It’s a great value for those who don’t need to be in the thick of things. A number of rooms have spectacular views of the fall colors along the Charles River. If you get stuck with a Cambridge view, just head to the sun deck off of the 75-foot atrium pool to take in the colors of fall.

It’s not an icon like the Plazaor the Pierre– but so what? The Mandarin Oriental, located across Columbus Circle from Central Park, offers a dizzying array of modern luxuries –a 75-foot pool, one of the city’s best spas, sweeping views from nearly every common area, and superb on-site fine-dining options, to name a few — even as it upholds traditional values and outstanding service. Book a Central Park View Room, Premier Central Park View Room, Central Park View Suite, or Premier Central Park View Suite for views of the bright leaves.

The historic Norwich Inn (where President James Monroe and Dr. Suess have both stayed) is a quaint, well-kept hotel with just 38 rooms. Some rooms may be small, particularly those in the Main House, but they have a cozy New England feel, with floral wallpaper, 4-poster beds, and exposed brick — along with modern amenities like flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi. The inn is frequented mainly by those visiting Dartmouth College, just a mile away, and those who want to explore other nearby areas of Vermont will need a car (parking is free). The hotel is located in Norwich which embraces the New England small-town feel — many historic homes line the streets, there aren’t any chain stores or restaurants, and one of its main attractions is the beautiful foilage in the fall. JW Marriott Hotel Washington, DC

A no-nonsense luxury hotel for the masses just steps away from the White House, the JW Marriott has a shopping mall-like multistory lobby and 772 cozy guestrooms. It’s modestly plush, but in a populist way — especially when compared with the place across the street, the Intercontinental Willard, which is richer and more exclusive. The Marriott is just around the corner from the White House and just blocks from beautiful parks.

With large, playfully furnished, the 236-room Hotel Marlowe is one of Cambridge’s most family-friendly hotels. Its neighbor, the Royal Sonesta Hotel, is cheaper and has a pool, but the Marlowe offers a boutique-like feel at a reasonable price, with personality to spare. A number of its rooms — such as the Studio Suite — overlook the tree-lined Charles River, a beautiful site in the fall.

An ostentatiously luxurious hotel with a supremely well-trained staff, and huge, elegant rooms designed by Ivanka Trump herself. The location (overlooking Central Park at Columbus Circle) can’t be beat — especially for guests seeking views of gorgeous fall colors. The hotel also has two highly regarded restaurants and an in-house pool.

While the 96 rooms of The Pointe at Castle Hill are clean and manageable, they fluctuate wildly from charmingly antique to generically modern. Some have burgundy walls, large four-poster beds and seriously old toilets, while other suites are bright with full kitchens and large, modern bathrooms. It certainly won’t top the most luxurious list, but those hitting the slopes at nearby Okemo Mountain during ski season may find it to be a suitable après-ski relaxation spot and the views are gorgeous, no matter the season. Tucked away in a leafy residential neighborhood near the National Zoo, D.C.’s biggest hotel is a blur of conventioneers — huge meetings are its bread and butter. The Washington Marriott Wardman has lovely grounds, a decent fitness center, and pleasant common areas; but in this price range, leisure travelers can usually do better than its run-of-the-mill chain rooms and (somewhat) out-of-the-way location. Those looking for leafy views can find them, though, in many of the rooms as well as from the glass-walled elevator.
