grounds-tortuga-bay-v26940-1025Renowned designer Oscar de la Renta died last night, and he will be forever remembered as one of women’s fashion’s top designers; he created gorgeous pieces for the likes of Jacqueline Kennedy, Michelle Obama, and Oprah Winfrey. But the designer’s skills went beyond just haute couture. The Dominican Republic native also had an eye for interior design, and was the decor guru behind the luxurious Tortuga Bay in the D.R.’s Punta Cana.

apartmenttherapy

Maxwell Ryan, founder of Apartment Therapy, knows a thing or two about turning up interior charm. He started out his career as an “apartment therapist,” transforming homes into beautiful, organized, and healthy-to-live-in spaces. You could say he’s a bit of a hybrid — part interior designer and part life coach. His style is about comfort, simplicity, and a lack of clutter. Today, his website has become the go-to site for design inspiration. Since our main decor interest here at Oyster.com is hotel-focused, we asked Maxwell to turn his creative eye towards hotel design. We couldn’t wait to hear of his favorite hotel spots around the globe. See his top picks after the jump >>

Perhaps because they serve as the venues for raucous parties, maybe because people are more likely to be up to no good while away from home, or possibly because checking in under an alias can make you feel invincible, but no matter the reason, hotels are often the scene of the crime for numerous scandals. Chief among them? The celebrity cheating scandals that fill the tabloids…and often ultimately end marriages. Just last week, Paula Patton filed for divorce from singer Robin Thicke, whom she had dated since she was 14, and Thicke admitted it was because he finally “told her the truth” about his drug use and infidelity — much of which took place while on the road. So while it’s sad to see, we did some research and found the hotels where celebrities have allegedly cheated on their significant others. Maybe this will serve as a precautionary tale (or maybe it’ll just give you the scoop on hot celebrity-sighting hotels), but either way, here are five hotels where famous celebs holed up to hook up.

Robin Thicke at The Greenwich Hotel

RobinThicke-Lead

Although “Blurred Lines” singer Robin Thicke and wife Paula Patton have been separated for months, Patton just filed for divorce last week, allegedly because she decided her longtime partner’s infidelity was unforgivable. The cheating scandal broke last summer, when socialite Lana Scolaro claimed that she and Thicke hooked up at a VMAs after-party at The Greenwich Hotel. Although the couple’s publicist downplayed the accusation, it didn’t help that pretty telling photos of Thicke with Scolaro were released online.

Owning and operating a hotel is a full-time job, and many of those who devote their lives to the hospitality industry specialize in all things hotel — and that’s it. But there are some unlikely faces in the exclusive “hotel owners of the world” club (hey, it probably exists) that got their starts in other industries; in fact, most of them have their hands in many pots and own their hotels while simultaneously acting, directing, cooking, designing, singing, running a country….you name it! So here we bring you nine surprising hotel owners, from chefs to sultans.

The Greenwich Hotel, owned by Robert De Niro

Greenwich Hotel

The Greenwich Hotel is the hub of Robert De Niro’s personal TriBeCa monopoly: he’s co-owner of the hotel, and also owns its direct neighbors, Locanda Verde restaurant and the Tribeca Film Center. Other owners include developers Ira Druker and Richard Born, of the Mercer and Bowery hotels — both of which are celebrity magnets. The Greenwich also attracts its fair share of stars with its gorgeous, homey rooms and sexy underground spa.

room view

This property is NEW on Oyster! With 25 freestanding cottages along a 20-acre bird sanctuary, this hilly resort is one of just a handful of hotels on Harbour Island. Understated sophistication is the vibe here; the grounds are peaceful (except for the roaming roosters), and the occasional celeb, such as Paul McCartney and his family, can be found bunkering down in the Banyan Tree Estate Home (shown above). Most guests seem happy to spend their days simply soaking up the sun at Pink Sands Beach — a beautiful and unspoiled three-mile stretch of sand from which the resort takes its name. Ocean view cottages offer outstanding panoramas from the patios and private walking paths to the beach, but cost almost twice as much as garden view cottages. Room decor mixes modern and tradition, with sleek wooden bed frames, romantic open-style showers, and screened-in windows that allow breezes to float in from all sides, for a truly tranquil stay in the Bahamas

New York Fashion Week may have come have to a close, but don’t fret — London Fashion Week has just arrived. And with hot U.K. labels like Stella McCartney, Temperley London, and Burberry Prorsum, we know that the catwalk will be just as innovative across the pond as it was here in New York. Plus, tons of celebs, models, and designers will be out and about in their finest fashions. (Duh.) They’ll be hitting up the hottest restaurants, bars, and clubs in the city — so get ahead of the curve and check out the see-and-be-seen spots in London for the fashion elite.

Langham Hotel London

THE HOT SPOT: Afternoon Tea

Restaurant at the Langham Hotel London; London, England

WHY IT’S HOT: One thing London has that New York doesn’t? Afternoon tea. The Langham Hotel, a five-pearl spot that oozes exclusivity, has a great West End location in Marylebone that’s within walking distance of numerous designer shops (should you have forgotten that must-wear LBD). And the Langham’s Palm Court is noted as the birthplace of the afternoon tea tradition, dating back to the hotel’s opening in 1865. Fashionistas can enjoy sipping on tea selected by their sommelier and nibble on dainty finger foods before heading off to the next show. And bonus? Bradley Cooper has been spotted here quite often recently as he’s been filming in the area.

We love whenever we can get a peek into the lives of the rich and famous, and we find it particularly thrilling to visit the haunts of timeless Hollywood stars and hallowed, storied authors (excuse the pun) of yore. After all, there’s something about the celebs of the past that’s just so much more elegant and refined — even in their infamous debauchery — than those of today’s tabloids. Fortunately, luxurious, historic hotels make it possible to revisit the good ole days, and we find ourselves especially interested in the Mediterranean spots they’d jet off to. So here we bring you five iconic jetsetter getaways in the Mediterranean.

Santa Caterina Hotel, Amalfi Coast

Santa Caterina Hotel

While most of the Amalfi hotels can claim excellent views across the coast, the 66 room-and-suite Santa Caterina Hotel has got five-star features, harmonious antique style, and fragrant gardens. Built against Amalfi’s seaside cliffs in 1880 as a home residence and turned into a hotel in 1904, this luxury property was once a favorite getaway of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, and in more recent days, has welcomed celebrities such as Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. The Santa Caterina’s four generations of ownership have treated her well, preserving historic elements while successively and successfully adding modern comfort and style.  Guests can take advantage of the wellness center, exclusive swimming pool access, and gym. Dining options range from the elegant Restaurant Santa Caterina to the more casual Al Mare eatery, along with an expansive wine cellar. This property is brand new on Oyster!

Jacob Tomsky is a hotel expert, but don’t ask him for advice on where to stay the night. Sure, he’s spent 10 years in hotels — but most of that time was racked up behind the front desk. He saw plenty from that vantage point, though, and in 2013, he published his laugh-out-loud memoir, Heads in Beds, which many have compared to Anthony Bourdain’s Kitchen Confidential. Through the memoir, readers get a glimpse into the inner workings of a luxury hotel…and some of the late-night antics Tomsky witnessed – plus tips and tricks for scoring free minibar snacks and upgrades, and just how much to tip the bellman. Today, he’s busy working on the follow-up to his New York Times bestselling book. We caught up with the author in the lobby of the Trump SoHo New York to get his take on hotel reviews, robot bellmen (why not?), and more.

the hotelIt’s been a tough couple of years for Atlantic City, thanks in no small part to the destruction Hurricane Sandy left in its wake. So as hotel experts who, like, really, love hotels, today is a sad day as the just-over-two-years-old Revel officially closed its casino doors this morning after shuttering the hotel on Monday evening. The casino resort is one of three AC hotels to fold in just a two-week period; Showboat closed on Sunday and the Trump Plaza is scheduled to close on September 16. But let’s reflect on happier times, shall we? Like when Kanye announced that now-wife Kim Kardashian was pregnant during a concert at the resort. Or when Michelle Obama attended a Beyonce performance there. Or when our hotel expert got to nosh on these delicious fish tacos during her stay! We hate to use a pun, but we guess Revel just never got to experience beginner’s luck.
